Sopris Theatre Company: In the National Spotlight

by: Kathryn Camp

Looking for Date-Night-Worthy community theatre? As well as nationally recognized theatre training for your college-bound student? Well, look no further than CMC’s Spring Valley campus.

Sopris Theatre Company’s production of The Other Place by Sharr White won accolades at the 2018 Colorado Theatre Festival where they were awarded Best Production, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Set Design and Excellence in Theatre; Supporting Actor. This has propelled the group to the 2019 American National Community Theatre (AACT) Festival, where they will compete next summer for national honors.

Mark your calendar and purchase tickets early to attend a special performance of The Other Place at the Wheeler Opera House on Friday, February 1. Proceeds from the show will help raise funds to bring cast and crew members to the AACT festival next summer in Gettysburg, PA for the national competition.

At the festival, the company will present The Other Place in a juried competition, and the cast and crew will also attend conferences in theatre management and youth leadership, educational workshops, plus design and monologue competitions.

“Our students benefit from the unique nature of our hybrid theatre,” explains Bradford Moore, the show’s director and Sopris Theatre Company’s operations manager. “It is a community theatre sitting on the campus of a community college. Students work with experienced community members while allowing seasoned performers to work as educators and mentors.”

As one of only 12 community theatre programs to be invited to perform at the AACT festival, Sopris Theatre Company offers opportunities for its students to network at a national level with producers, directors, designers and actors whose work might influence their careers and deepen their studies. It also places our small valley on the community-theatre map, inviting national audiences to pay attention to what is being staged here.

“This college/community partnership also allows for a well-rounded season with a more diverse and engaging selection of plays to be produced,” says Moore about the company’s five-show season, which includes student workshop productions written and performed by students.  SAVE THE DATE for Sopris Theatre Company’s upcoming Spring lineup: The Other Place (February 1), The Nerd (Feb 15-24) and Ladies of the Camellias (April 5-14).
